If you haven't been to a funeral before, you're probably wondering what to expect.

Will there be readings? How many people will be there? Will there be an alternative dress code? These are just some of the questions you might ask yourself before a funeral service.

Another is how long the funeral will last. Knowing this can help you mentally and, in some cases, physically prepare for the occasion.

A traditional funeral in the UK lasts between 30 minutes and an hour. However, this is just a ballpark figure. The length of the funeral depends on a whole host of factors – from religious customs to family wishes to the order of service.

Some funerals also include a procession, a burial ceremony or a wake. A wake is a social gathering after a funeral. It can last for several hours.

How long is a typical funeral service?

One factor affecting the length of a funeral is whether the funeral is religious or not. That's because some religions include readings and rituals in their services, which make them last longer.

Another is how many personal tributes there will be. Sometimes, only one person will speak about the person who has died. But, depending on the wishes of the family and the person who died, there could be slideshows, readings or even live music.

The length of a funeral can also change depending on whether there's a procession or wake.

Finally, the venue's availability may affect how long the service lasts. It may be that the venue needs the service to be over by a particular time. If it's a cremation service, the crematorium will likely offer slots of a particular length.

How long is a Humanist funeral service?

A Humanist funeral service may last anywhere between 20 minutes and an hour. The length will depend on how many tributes, readings and songs the family decides to include.

If it's a humanist cremation, the crematorium may offer a slot of a particular length. You may be able to book a double slot if you want to arrange a longer service.

How long is a religious funeral service?

We don't have space to cover all the different types of religious funeral services. Here, however, are the typical funeral lengths for some of the major religions in the UK.

How long is a Catholic funeral?

A Catholic funeral Mass usually lasts between 45 minutes and an hour. It can, however, go on as long as 90 minutes.

The exact length will depend on:

  • The number of readings
  • The number of hymns
  • The length of the homily (a type of short sermon)

A Catholic funeral without Mass at a funeral home or gravesite will be shorter than one in church. These usually last between 30 and 40 minutes.

How long is a Baptist funeral service?

A Baptist funeral service will typically last 45 to 60 minutes. It will include hymns, scripture readings and eulogies.

H4: How long does a Muslim funeral last?

Muslim funerals (Janazah) tend to be shorter than traditional UK funerals. Most last between half an hour and an hour. The funeral usually takes place within 24 hours of the person's death.

How long does a Jewish funeral service last?

In Judaism, different branches have different kinds of funerals. Orthodox Jewish funerals tend to be short – around 15 to 20 minutes. Reform and Conservative services often include more readings, so they will last longer.

The biggest factor in the length of a Jewish funeral is how many hespedim (eulogies) there are. It will also depend on whether the funeral takes place solely by the graveside or begins at the shul.

How long does a Hindu funeral service last?

Hindu funeral ceremonies typically last around half an hour. The exact length will depend on specific customs and the family's wishes.

It's worth noting, however, that the funeral service is only one part of a longer mourning period. This mourning period includes other ceremonies and lasts for 10 to 13 days after the funeral.

How long is a celebration of life?

A celebration of life is an alternative type of funeral that centres on positive memories and has a more joyful tone.

Celebrations of life are a relatively recent invention. They don't have fixed structures like many types of traditional funerals. This means a celebration of life can last any length of time.

That said, they're often longer than a traditional service. A celebration of life could include tributes, activities, food and music.

How long does a direct cremation last?

A direct cremation is a simple cremation with a service . That means there's no ceremony to attend. However, some funeral homes allow you to spend some time with the person who has died before the cremation. This is usually provided as an optional extra.

Can I leave a funeral early?

In some situations, you may need to leave a funeral early. That could be because of an emergency or feeling emotionally overwhelmed.

If this happens to you, it's best to leave in a way that doesn't attract attention or disrupt the service. If possible, you could tell the family before leaving.

However you do it, the main thing is to show respect to the person who died and their family and to leave as discreetly as possible.
