Can funeral directors register a death?
Your funeral director can support you through many parts of the funeral planning process. That includes looking after the person who has died, making arrangements with the funeral venue and overseeing the funeral ceremony.
Funeral directors can also handle much of the paperwork on your behalf. However, we are unable to register a person's death. This is usually done by a family member.
If a family member can't do it, someone who was present when the person died or the person arranging the funeral can register the death. You can learn more in our guides on what to do when a person dies.
Can a funeral home get the death certificate?
As with registering a death, a funeral parlour cannot request a death certificate. However, we don't need to see the death certificate to start planning the funeral. Instead, we need a document known as 'the green form'. You'll be given this document when you register the death.
What do funeral directors need to know?
Don't worry if you're not sure how the process works. We understand that arranging a funeral is a new and unfamiliar experience for many people. We're here to guide you through each step at your own pace.
In most cases, we only need to see one document to get started. This document is officially called a 'certificate for burial or cremation' but is more commonly known as 'the green form'. You'll receive this document when you register the death. We don't need to see a death certificate.
From that point on, it's about listening to your needs and working together to arrange the funeral you want. At first, you might not be sure what exactly you want – and that's fine. We'll ask questions and gently guide you towards the choices that feel right for you and your loved one.
You might want to think of some questions to ask us, too. We're always honest and transparent with our clients – and we're more than happy to answer any queries you might have.
